Health Tips for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women have particular health and nourishment needs. They are eating for two people, for themselves and for the new baby that is rising inside their womb. So they want to be sure they are eating healthy foods. It is important for pregnant women to watch what they eat and drink. For example, doctors advise the strict avoidance of all alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.

It is also recommended to take a folic acid supplement. Folic acid is included in any good quality brand of prenatal vitamins, as are other important nutrients such as B vitamins, minerals like calcium, etc.

If you are trying to conceive, experiencing some symptoms of pregnancy, or are now pregnant, you will want to eat a balanced and healthy diet. Your body will experience many changes as the months go by. Be sure to get plenty of rest. Fatigue is a common complaint of pregnant women. Your body is going through a lot of stressful work to create a human life. You are doing something totally amazing. And you deserve a rest, don't you think? Of course you do. So take plenty of breaks, sit down, even take a nap every day if you can.

You and your baby will need more calories during the pregnancy stages. Some doctors estimate that you will consume round 300 additional calories each day. Just make sure the added calories come from healthy foods, not junk food. It is normal to have some cravings, because you need extra nutrients, but these cravings can be lessened by taking prenatal vitamins. You body wants and needs added nutrition, to help your baby grow, so eat plenty of health foods such as yogurt, fruit, bran muffins, veggies, etc.

Stay away from cigarettes and from people who smoke them. Second hand smoke can be bad for you and for your developing baby. Also avoid chemicals of all kinds. Don't use, inhale or be around any paint, harsh cleaning compounds, bug sprays and pesticides, weed killers, or any serious chemicals such as those.

Get some mild exercise every day. Going for a walk is the best form of exercise. This gets your blood flowing and increases oxygen levels in your body. Don't do any sit ups or crunches or tummy exercises. And avoid doing any heavy lifting.

Talk to your nurse or doctor on a regular basis. Pregnant women are going through a special time in their lives and they have special needs, special eating habits, special vitamins, etc. Take extra special good care of yourself so you will have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Top 10 Things Never to Say to a Pregnant Woman

We’ve all heard them, said them, or overheard them. Open mouth, insert foot. Here are the top ten lists of things you should not say to a pregnant woman.

Medical Blog
10. “Were you trying to get pregnant again???” Ah, what a nice response when you announce your pregnancy. If you hear this, let it roll off of your back. People have all sorts of opinions on how many children to have, and how close to have them together. Smile, nod, and back away slowly.

9. “So are you feeling sick? You know, a friend of mine was sick her entire pregnancy.” Just for the record, this tends to scare pregnant women, especially first timers who are still in the first trimester – so try to keep this bit of info to yourself if you’re tempted to share this with a pregnant woman. And if you happen to hear this when you’re pregnant, don’t let it worry you one bit. Everyone knows someone who has suffered through morning sickness their entire pregnancy, but this does not happen very often at all.

8. “So, are you going to find out the sex, or do you want to be surprised?” Now, asking if someone is going to find out if they’re having a boy or a girl is a perfectly reasonable, polite question. The thing that isn’t so polite is the way some people say this, which sets it up to sound like it’s better to “just say no” during the ultrasound, and wait till the baby is born to find out. There are folks out there that think finding out gender somehow ruins the surprise, and they don’t hide their disapproval of your decision to take a peek during the sonogram. But you know what? It’s a surprise either way, whether you find out at the ultrasound or on delivery day.

7. “You know, you won’t take any pictures of the second baby the way you did of your first.” I don’t know why everyone feels the need to say this when you’re pregnant with your second, but don’t listen to it. Just because you will be busier with two children does not mean you’ll forget how to use a camera. Look at it this way – if you were good at keeping up with pictures of your first baby, you’ll be even more experienced at taking good pictures of your second baby.

6. “Did you know that gaining too much weight during your pregnancy increases you chances of being obese for the rest of your life?” Seriously, do not show your pregnant friend an article about how gaining too much weight during pregnancy will set her up to be overweight forever. And if someone does something crazy like that to you, just ignore them. People blurt out all sorts of things – so once again, let it roll off of your back.

5. “So let me ask you a question. Is morning sickness real, or do pregnant women make it up to get attention?” There are no words for this one. No words.

4. “Are you disappointed? Were you hoping for a boy?” It surprised me how much people assumed I would be bummed at having three girls. I know that the Hallmark cards often picture one boy and one girl, but two (or three, or four...) of the same gender is nothing to be disappointed about. And guess what? You’re allowed to have as many kids as you choose to. I like to remind people of that when they act like I’m missing out because we don't have a boy. (Also, I’m not missing out at all. Having three girls is awesome.)

3. “Well, you’ve gained more weight than you should have.” A doctor said this to me, but this was during the pregnancy when I only gained 27lbs! He was also about 112 years old, and still acted like we lived back in the day when pregnant women were supposed to gain about fifteen pounds max. They were able to do this by smoking their entire pregnancy, of course. So don’t worry about your weight gain, because the main goal is a healthy baby and a healthy mom. The weight will come off (you may have to skip ice cream for a while…) so don’t sweat it.

2. “Oh, you must be due soon. I can tell because your ankles are really swollen.” No matter how uncomfortable a pregnant woman looks, you should still smile at her and tell her she doesn’t look pregnant from behind, that she’s beautiful, etc. She may know you’re lying, but she’ll appreciate the thought. (Additional note: When commenting on the appearance of a pregnant woman, do not ask her "how many babies" she is having. Trust me.)

1. “A friend of mine had such a hard time delivering her baby that the nurse had to jump on top of her stomach to force the baby out.” This is probably one of the worst things you can say to a pregnant woman, because it tends to scare the crap out of her. I had a couple of different women share various horror stories (that was one of them), when I was pregnant. You should worry about these stories about as much as you should worry about that campfire story with the guy and the hook. Everyone knows someone who had something crazy go wrong, but that’s no reason to get spun up and worry about your own delivery. You’ll do just fine.

If you happen to be pregnant, keep these things in mind and remember that people really do say some dumb things. Take the compliments to heart, and ignore the rest. Even if you don’t feel cute, I assure you that you are (of course I happen to love pregnant women, and think they’re adorable). If someone causes you to worry about morning sickness or labor, ignore it. Your pregnancy is just that – your pregnancy. It’s not going to be like anyone else’s.

So sit back, have some ice cream, and enjoy your pregnancy.

Japan Nuclear Healt Risk

Really Excellent Explanations with Nuclear Engineer and Precautions to Limit Health Risks from Nuclear Plant Radiation in Japan and Other Countries.

# Beyond the basic explanation reproduced below I have found an additional 3 very comprehensive explanations and discussions of what can be done to protect from the nuclear radiation and fallout if it happens in Japan and in other countries. A Chat with a Nuclear Engineer about the Japan Nuclear Power Plant

# Precautions Should Limit Health Problems from Nuclear Plant Radiation
# Radiation Exposure and the Effects on Human Health I was discussing the sad and scary events in Japan with a friend. I was surprised to discover that this well educated person did not know what nuclear fission is, something I suspect is true for millions of other people too. So how does a nuclear aka atomic power plant work? And is it dangerous when it blows it's top? Is it like an atomic bomb? The answer is yes it is (dangerous)and no it is not like an atomic bomb.

All electric power plants use something to turn turbines which turn generators and so make electricity. In the case of hyrdoelectric dams (eg. Hoover Dam) the water falling on a wheel turns the turbine which turns the generator and makes electricity. In the case of coal fired power plants, the heat from burning the coal, makes steam that turns the turbines that turns the generator that makes electricity. In the case of atomic (nuclear) power plants, the heat from a controlled atomic reaction (fission) makes steam which turns the turbine which turns the generator to make electricity.

Both the atomic bomb and atomic power plants use nuclear fission, a reaction, the so called "splitting of the atom". When the atoms are "split" energy is given off. But the fission in an atomic plant still is different than an atomic bomb. In the case of an atomic bomb the fission reaction goes into overdrive and huge amounts of energy are released immediately.. In the case of atomic power, the reactions are controlled and contained, the energy is given off in a regulated and controlled fashion.

Never the less, a veritable zoo of radioactive particles and radiation are associated with the nuclear reaction. If they get near you or in you they can do an assortment of nasty things such as messing up your dna..Usually these atomic creatures are all contained but the problem is when things go out of whack and some of these zoo creatures get out of their cages so to speak.

What has happened in Japan? Why is it dangerous?...The "nuclear fuel" is encased and manipulated by elaborate mechanisms to control the speed of the nuclear reaction and also to prevent any of the radioactive material from escaping into the environment around the plant. Among the control mechanisms is the use of water to cool things down.

Although the exact situation in Japan is rather opaque (at least to outsiders) it seems that the damage from the earthquake and tsunami has broken some of the protective containment mechanisms..Some of the broken plants have not been able to provide adequate water to cool the nuclear fuel and the tremendous heat of the atomic fission has literally melted at least partially the atomic fuel.

There are layers of protective barriers between the "zoo of particles and radiation" and the outside world. There is good news and bad news about radioactive particles. The good news is that the radioactivity decreases with time, the bad news is that the time can be anywhere from a few seconds to thousands of years. The time it takes for the material to decrease is measured by the half life. If a material has a half life of 1 month, that means in one month half the material will be gone, and after one more month half of the remainder will be gone, etc.

The zoo of particles and radiation is made up of things with short and long half lives as well. If the zoo creatures get out their danger depends on how close they get to you. Some are dangerous if they get near you, others are dangerous only if they get inside you.

Right now everyone is working to keep the zoo creatures from getting out and near to people.

Teach Your Child How To Be Healthy

In a country where child obesity levels are rising every year due to the fast food industry and the growing lack of discipline the World's children have today, what could be more important than making sure your child isn't one of the statistics? It is never to late to start raising your children to know the importance of using healthy foods in place of their sodas, and cheeseburgers and all the fried and unhealthy foods today’s kids crave.

At an age where their bodies are in the most important stages of growth and development, why would a parent not want their child to be taught what’s healthy and what’s not? Why not show your children what a good cup of herbal tea can feel like as it goes down nice and warm especially during what is left of these cold months. The very same herbs that are good for all adults are also good for all children even babies.

There is nothing to fear, in fact they may think of you as their savior if in 20 years from now they go in for that dreaded biopsy and it comes back negative. It is a proven fact that some herbs lower the risk of later in life heart attacks, cancer, and even child hood diseases. It is still cold and flu season so you can tell them of the importance of keeping their immune system in tip top shape and even can make it a family event.

What would it cost you? About $3.00 in most retail stores for one box of 20 herbal tea bags that could positively alter the health of your children and family for life. Besides with everyone "going green" you can be sure that in school your children are talking about techniques on this subject as well as probably noticing changes in the school and their friends, so you might become the best mom or dad in the world with your kids.

It never hurt to dream, but you never know. It is a fact that more and more people today are going towards the green living idea and that means your kids will be learning about this lifestyle soon if not already. So why not get a head start and be the first to teach your children what herbs can do for them, especially in place of all those sugar, high fructose corn syrup and caffeine loaded sodas that does nothing more than lower the body’s ability to absorb healthy nutrients and fight off illnesses.

10 Ways to Avoid a Heart Attack

A heart attack is identified as a myocardial infarction. This happens when the heart muscle is injured or does not obtain sufficient oxygen. Many cardiac associated problems occur due to blockages in arteries that take purified blood away from the heart to different parts of the body. One more cause is the formation of blood clots.

Health Tips
Very often, it is quite hard to distinguish among a heart attack and heartburn. The common signs of a heart attack are a tightness, pain, or uneasiness in the chest. Sweating, nausea, and vomiting that are accompanied by intense force in the chest. A radiating and intense pain in the chest that extends from the chest to the left arm. A shortness of breath for more than a few minutes. If you have any of the above you must check with the doctor or go to the disaster rooms.

If you even think you are having a heart attack you must call for a cardiac care ambulance, and put under your tongue a sorbitrate or chew an aspirin. If you are allergic to aspirin don’t take one. At the hospital care will include rapid thrombolysis, cardiac catheterization, and angioplasty. They will also administer intravenously clot busting medications.

The risk factors for a heart attack include: smoking, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, hypertension, family history of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, lack of exercise, obesity, and fast foods.

Reduce the risks of a heart attack by:
1. Quitting smoking.
2. eating healthy. Avoid fatty foods, excess salt, and red meats.
3. Controlling high blood pressure and diabetes.
4. Ensuring regular exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Walking is most beneficial.
5. Preventing obesity. Doing all you can to maintain weight.
6. Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle.
7. Practicing meditation.
8. Doing regular relaxation and breathing exercises.
9. Undergoing periodic cardiac evaluations.
10. Including foods that are rich in anti-oxidants in your diet.

A killer disease, according to the American Heart Association approximately 58.8 million people in the US suffer from heart diseases. And, about 950,000 Americans die of heart ailments each year. Heart diseases and death from it can be prevented by maintaining your health.

Find stability in life among work and other activities, dump the couch for the outdoors, and don’t watch sports on television play sports in its place and you can hope to live a long and satisfied life.

5 Diabetes Travel Tips

Preparation ahead when you travel reduces pressure. This is mainly important for a diabetic. These 5 diabetes travel tips are simple to execute and critical to your diabetic management. They are mainly important if you are traveling abroad.

Medical Blog
1) Have a pre-travel test. Make confident your A1C blood sugar levels; your blood pressure and your cholesterol levels are OK. Get the proper shots for any country you plan to visit.

2) Wear a diabetes medical ID. Ideally it should be in the language spoken in the country you’re visiting. Not everyone speaks your language and you don’t want medical problems through misunderstandings.

3) Keep your medication and glucose snacks in your hand-luggage. Check-in baggage does, unfortunately, go astray. Don’t risk your diabetes medication by packing it in your main luggage.

4) Keep your medication in its original box, complete with pharmacy labels. It will prevent misunderstandings about why you are carrying drugs and, if you are on insulin, syringes.

5) Be aware of time zone changes, especially when altering your watch. Remember when you travel east your day becomes shorter; if you travel west your day becomes longer. You may need to alter the timings of your medication.

Traveling require not be disturbing. A reasonable attitude and a bit of pre-travel preparation can make things go far more health efficient. .
